Girlhood is a spectrum. It is shared experiences and intergenerational wisdom, the beginning of the world and of all things beautiful. Girlhood is the mightiest of forces, a mystical gateway to life and a conduit to the realm of death. Girlhood is what leads one to choose the bear when asked whom one would rather encounter in the woods. Pyllytys, driving away a bear through the power of the vulva, is a task for girls of all ages and genders. Indeed, the bear strives to avoid humans at all costs and encounters are rare. Coexistence with bears and other large carnivores is possible, whereas violence against women remains a significant human rights issue in Finland. A bear defends itself or its cubs. The worst thing a bear could do is kill me. If a bear were to attack me, I would be believed.
